Mercedes’ First Compact Electric SUV
A new, fully-electric addition to the Mercedes-Benz SUV lineup is coming to the U.S. in late 2022, with distinctive styling and lots of room packed into compact dimensions. The new EQB offers space for up to seven passengers with an optional third row of seats, and comes in two trim levels with up to 288 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive.
Available for order now, the EQB 300 4Matic starts at $54,500 MSRP, with the more powerful EQB 350 4Matic priced from $58,050 MSRP.
A Miniature Electric G-Wagon
Maybe the coolest thing about the EQB is the way it looks. Despite being quite efficient aerodynamically, it doesn’t look like an electric jellybean: in fact, its boxy greenhouse and upright proportions make it look like a shrunken G-Wagon, Mercedes’ iconic high-end off-roader. That boxy styling doesn’t just look cool, either: it pays dividends by opening up enough space for seven decent-sized seats, enough for large families and a wide variety of transportation needs.
EQ-specific design language, signifying Mercedes’ electric models, comes via front and rear LED light bands that are seamlessly integrated into the black- panel grill.
Inside, it’s all Mercedes, with high-quality materials, super-comfortable seating, and a ton of digital technology. The dashboard integrates two wide screens, one that functions as the instrument cluster for the driver, and the second for all infotainment functions; they both feature high resolution displays and are easy to use. The second row of seats is easy to access through wide rear doors, and the optional third row has enough room for adults, if slightly compromising cargo space.
Impressive Standard Equipment
The EQB SUV will be offered in two trim levels for America: Exclusive and Pinnacle. Both trim levels build upon the generous standard equipment offered in the EQB, providing a high level of comfort, convenience and unique electric features. Highlights of the Exclusive trim include keyless go, wireless charging, and an advanced sound system. Upgrading to the Pinnacle trim adds a panoramic sunroof, surround-view camera and exceptional Burmester sound system.
The latest-generation MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system features augmented reality navigation on the dual 10.25-inch screens. This overlays navigation directions on top of a live image, reducing confusion and making navigation easier than ever. Safety features such as active lane keeping assist, blind spot assist, and active brake assist are also equipped as standard. In many critical situations, the latter system has the ability to prevent a collision or reduce its severity with automatically-applied braking. The system is also able to brake for stationary vehicles and crossing pedestrians at typical city speeds.
“Electric intelligence” is also layered into the navigation system, making the EQB easy to incorporate into everyday life. It calculates the fastest routes to destinations, including any necessary charging stops. Using continual range simulations, the system makes allowances for necessary charging stops as well as for other factors, such as the topography and the weather. It’s also able to react dynamically to changes – for instance, traffic situations or personal driving style. In addition, the electric intelligence feature ensures the high-voltage battery is brought to an optimal charging temperature before a planned charging stop, if needed.
The Mercedes me Charge function offers a truly hassle-free charging experience. EQB drivers are able to use charging stations from various providers through Mercedes me Charge, which offers seamless integrated payments with simple billing processes. Two years of Mercedes me Charge is included with the EQB. In addition, Mercedes-Benz USA provides EQB drivers with an unlimited number of 30–minute charging sessions throughout the entire Electrify America network at no additional cost for two years. This benefit extends to Electrify America's more than 2,600 ultra-fast DC chargers across the continental United States.
Up to 260 Miles of Range
On the European driving cycle – EPA estimates have yet to be finalized – both versions of the new EQB achieve up to 260 miles of range. We’d expect given greater highway usage in America that real-world range will be in the 230-240 mile range – perfectly adequate for daily use, especially if you’re charging at home overnight. The EQB features a 66.5-kWh lithium-ion battery that operates at a slightly elevated 420 volts; it can charge at up to 100 kW, with Mercedes promising a 10-80% charge in just over 30 minutes.
Both the 225-hp EQB 300 4Matic and the 288-hp EQB 350 4Matic are fitted with two electric motors. The rear axle has a new permanently-excited synchronous motor that is extremely compact in design. In a permanently-excited synchronous motor, the rotor of the AC motor is fitted with permanent magnets. The magnets – and thus the rotor – follow the rotating alternating current field in the stator windings; the rotor turns at the same rate as the magnetic field of the stator. The driver’s demands for speed are adapted by the power electronics to deliver the correct frequency. The advantages of this design include high power density, high efficiency and high output consistency.
In Conclusion
The EQB offers a compelling combination of great versatility, compact SUV proportions, innovative technology and high everyday usability. It might be small on the outside, but it’s a big step in bringing more electric Mercedes models to American roads.
