A Best-Selling Hybrid Gets a Boost

Toyota’s Corolla is the best-selling vehicle in the history of the world, ever, with millions delivered since it was first introduced in the 1960s. The latest-generation Corolla, which debuted in 2019, was the first to offer a hybrid model, which quickly went on to become one the best-selling hybrids in the market. Drivers loved its reliability, economy, and strong Toyota resale value.

For 2023, the Toyota Corolla Hybrid gets a big upgrade. Not only is there a choice of five trim levels to give consumers lots of choice, but the new model also debuts a more powerful hybrid system, and the availability of electronic on-demand all-wheel drive.

More Powerful Hybrid System

All 2023 Corolla Hybrid models gain a more powerful hybrid powertrain. As before, the Corolla Hybrid pairs a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gas engine with two electric motor-generators with a continuously variable transmission. A new compact high-output motor uses two additional magnets for increased output. This means power output rises from 121 hp to 134, and torque rises from 146 to 156 lb-ft. It gets an estimated 50 MPG city and 43 MPG highway, according to the EPA.

If you live in northern states where the snow falls, the new all-wheel drive Corolla Hybrid is even more appealing, delivering added traction for slippery road conditions while still retaining exemplary fuel economy. Electronic on-demand all-wheel drive employs a separate rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed. It works seamlessly and transparently. The rear motor also engages in response to slippage at the front wheels and enhances cornering agility.

Thanks to smart packaging, there is no compromise in cabin roominess when choosing the Hybrid Corolla versus a gas model. The lithium-ion battery pack is placed under the rear seat. The battery location also contributes to the vehicle’s lower center of gravity, which enhances agility.

The zippy engine, working in concert with the electric motor, provides responsive performance, while regenerative braking helps recharge the battery. When pulling away from a stop, the electric motor provides a subtle power boost. The Corolla Hybrid also offers an EV mode, which allows it to be operated as a pure electric vehicle for short distances.

More Economical Than Ever

The other big news for 2023 is a price reduction – $1,250 in the case of the 2023 Corolla Hybrid LE. The Hybrid LE is now joined by a new LE AWD grade, sporty SE and SE AWD grades and a premium-focused XLE, which is only available as a hybrid.

All Corolla Hybrid models upgrade to new Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 with new Proactive Driving Assist, including Obstacle Anticipation Assist and Deceleration Assist. There’s also a brand-new infotainment system with an 8-inch high-resolution touchscreen and added capabilities, including standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All models add two rear-seat USB-C ports for a total of four in the car.
