The Best of All Worlds
BMW is one of the originals in the electric-car space. It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 10 years since the original i3 and i8 were introduced, ushering in electric drive along with carbon-core construction and a host of other innovations. Now, the company is on a real push to electrify its entire lineup; the iX crossover’s arrival is imminent, with the i4 Gran Coupe, the subject of today’s feature, not far behind. We’re excited about the i4 because it wraps up the traditional advantages of electric driving (zero emissions, instant torque, high technology) with all of the things we love about BMW (sleek styling, great handling, and what promises to be an awesome driving experience). In that sense, we think it combines the best of both worlds.
How We'd Spec a BMW i4
To spec the perfect i4, we spoke to John Moyer, New Car Sales Manager at BMW of Ann Arbor in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He’s actually thinking of ordering an i4 for himself, and the following specs reflect his personal taste as well as recommendations for best price and performance.
2022 BMW i4 M50: Starting MSRP $65,900
Moyer chose the more powerful M50 model, with 536 horsepower instead of 335, not for the extra power, but because the dual-motor M50 comes with all-wheel drive, an important consideration for Michigan winters.
Brooklyn Grey Metallic: $550
“It’s a new color for 2022,” says Moyer. “And Brooklyn Grey looks fantastic on everything we’ve seen it on.”
19-Inch M Bi-Color Midnight Grey Aero Wheels, Style 860M: $0
All-Season Non Run-Flat Tires: $0
Your choice of wheels can significantly impact your range on an electric vehicle. While large, open-spoke wheel designs are more attractive, these Aero wheels significantly improve the i4 M50’s rated range, up to 370 miles. “That’s a compromise I’m willing to make and it’s still a neat-looking wheel.”
High-Gloss Shadowline Trim: $400
Replaces the chrome exterior trim with high-gloss black, which matches better with the Brooklyn Grey paint.
Tacora Red Vernasca Leather with Contrast Stitching: $1,450
While synthetic leather is available, Moyer thinks real leather, with contrasting stitching, is a better fit for the premium price of the M50.
Aluminum Trim with Mesh Effect: $0
Tacora Red is a new color for 2022, and he’s paired it with a mesh-effect aluminum trim to speak to the high-tech nature of the car.
Premium Package: $950
The Premium package includes heated seats and steering wheel along with variable ambient lighting and other luxury features.
Harman Kardon Surround Sound System: $875
Harman Kardon surround sound upgrades the performance of the stereo to match the car.
Driving Assistance Professional Package: $1,700
“This car is all about the technology,” says Moyer. The driving assistance package includes active cruise control, lane departure warning, and other active safety features.
Parking Assistance Package: $700
Parking assistance has a 3D surround view to make parking easier.
Wireless Device Charging: $200
Personal eSIM 5G: $300
A 5G eSIM and wireless charging enhances the infotainment experience.
Head-Up Display: $1,000
This futuristic heads-up display lets you keep your eyes on the road.
Destination & Handling: $995
There was a little extra added for vehicle delivery, since this vehicle wasn't available locally.
Total Price With Addons (Based on MSRP) $75,020
The final price for this spec-perfect BMW i4 came to just over $75,000, before EV incentives and other potential savings. Find out how much you can save with the GreenCars EV Incentive tool.
