Pizza Delivery Goes Green
Domino's, the largest pizza company in the world, is taking a big step to electrify its pizza delivery vehicle fleet. In November of 2022, the company rolled out over 100 custom-branded 2023 Chevy Bolt electric cars to select franchises and corporate stores. 700 more will roll out in the coming months, making the Domino’s fleet the largest electric pizza delivery fleet in the U.S.
The company has a history of innovating ways to get Americans their pizzas faster and more efficiently. Domino’s first launched its delivery service in 1960 with a single Volkswagen Beetle. More recently, it rolled out a “DXP” delivery vehicle based on a Chevy Sonic, with custom pizza warmer, as well as autonomous delivery with cars and robots. It sees the 800 new electric cars as a step on its path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and a way to reduce its environmental impact, one delivery at a time.
Advantages for Fleet Operators
Electric cars provide several advantages. The Bolt has ample battery life for daily use, and as deliveries typically take place within a prescribed area, they have predictable usage patterns, and can be charged at the store. In addition to no tailpipe emissions, electric cars also have much lower average maintenance costs and are immune to fluctuations in gasoline prices.
Domino’s says electric fleet vehicles also provide more opportunity to attract delivery drivers who don't have a car of their own. Today, Domino's already delivers with electric bikes or scooters in 24 international markets, including the U.S.
2023 Chevrolet Bolt
With a low entry price, compact package, and good range, the Chevy Bolt EV is a good fit for Domino’s needs. Its 65-kWh battery gives it an EPA-estimated 259-mile range, meaning it can do several days’ worth of deliveries before charging is required.
One of the best-selling EVs in the U.S., the Bolt is efficiently packaged as well as efficient to operate. It makes full use of its the battery as a “skateboard,” with a spacious cabin on top of a tiny footprint. There’s lots of space for the driver, and lots of pizzas. The interior is intelligently laid-out as well, and modern safety features keep drivers safe – and reduce the risk for the company.
Domino's partnered with Enterprise Fleet Management to source its Chevy Bolt EVs, and Enterprise will offer local, vehicle acquisition, financing, telematics solutions and maintenance for the electric delivery fleet.
