An SUV for the Electric Age

Polestar, Volvo’s electrified sister brand, has teased its latest model, a new SUV called the Polestar 3. Like other Polestar models, it is electric-only, and is wrapped in a distinctively Scandinavian shape. The company says it redefines the SUV for the electric age.

The Polestar 3 is developed on a new, all-electric platform developed by and shared with Volvo, and as such, it features the latest in high-tech componentry. This includes centralized core computing systems from NVIDIA, as well as a long list of advanced safety features that you’ll be familiar with from Volvo vehicles. New industry partners, including Zenseact, Luminar, and Smart Eye, have also contributed to the Polestar 3’s suite of active safety systems.

Low and Sleek, with Performance to Match

From what we can tell from the first teaser image, the Polestar 3 features a low, sleek roofline that makes it stand out from the boxy SUV norm. It has a low center of gravity and a very wide track, which should provide excellent stability, as well as the impressive handling characteristics that Polestar has become known for.

Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, says that the Polestar 3 has an “instant ability to transform from a comfortable cruiser to a sharp, agile performance car in the blink of an eye.”

At launch, all versions of the Polestar 3 will feature a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with a sporty rear bias. Electric torque vectoring is also standard, thanks to a dual clutch system on the rear electric motor. An adaptive dual-chamber air suspension system and adjustable dampers are also standard, which is what allows the Polestar 3 to switch between comfortable and firm suspension settings. Indeed, the company says the dampers can adjust to road conditions once every two milliseconds.

A optional performance pack will take things even further, enabling a maximum output of over 500 hp and 670 lb-ft of torque. The performance pack, which is visually distinguished by gold details inside and out, also includes upgraded tuning for the adaptive dampers and air suspension.

We’ll learn more about the new Polestar SUV on October 12, when it will debut during a live online event. Stay tuned to GreenCars for more details!
