States Offering the Best EV Incentives

You’ve probably heard about the federal EV incentive for purchasing a plug-in hybrid or all-electric vehicle, but did you know that most states hand out rebates for buying or leasing EVs as well? These government-offered rebates were created to promote the sale and ownership of electric vehicles, but each state has different rules for the EV tax credits they offer. Here are some of the most EV-friendly states that offer incentives.

  • California will give you $2,500 rebate for all plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles, but you have to make less than $150,000 per year as an individual or $204,000 as the head of a household.
  • Colorado offers $2,500 toward the purchase of an EV and $1,250 towards a lease. There’s also a rebate program called Xcel that gives EV buyers $5,500 up front towards a new EV or $3,000 towards a used one.
  • Connecticut will give you $1,000 on the purchase of a plug-in hybrid and $2,000 toward the purchase of an all-electric vehicle. The state’s rebate program can give you up to $4,250 for a qualifying new EV.
  • Delaware offers rebates of $1,500 when you buy a plug-in hybrid and $3,500 on a new all-electric vehicle.
  • Maryland pays you a rebate based on the size of the battery pack with a cap of $3,000. You can also get 40 percent off the cost of home charging equipment for Level 2 charging, up to $700.
  • Massachusetts offers $1,500 for plug-in hybrids and $2,500 for all-electric vehicles.
  • New Jersey gives you a tax rebate of anywhere from $2,500 to $8,000 depending on the car you choose.
  • Oregon hands out a cash rebate of $2,500 for purchase or lease of a plug-in hybrid or all-electric car.
  • New York’s Drive Clean Rebate program is good for $2,000 toward EVs that cost under $60,000.
